Shed, granny flat or metal studio: which WiFi fix actually works
You want WiFi in the shed, the granny flat or the studio out the back, and every forum tells you to buy a stronger antenna.
Getting WiFi to a shed, a granny flat or a metal studio is not one job, it is several, and the right fix depends on three things: how far the building sits from the house, whether you can see it, and what power and internet it already has. Chase a bigger antenna and you usually solve none of them.
This guide is a short decision tree. Answer three questions, land on the fix that actually works for your building, and skip the gear that was never going to help.

Three questions decide the fix
Distance from the house, line of sight, and power on site decide the fix. Answer those and the choice makes itself.
A metal shed blocks, not weakens
Steel and Colorbond act like a Faraday cage. Put the access point inside and feed it, do not blast harder from outside.
Match the tool to the gap
Close and powered wants a cable or mesh. Far but visible wants a bridge. No line at all wants mobile or Starlink.
Start with three questions
Before you buy anything, answer these three things about the building you are trying to cover:
- How far is it from the house? Same block, or hundreds of metres up the paddock?
- Can you see it from the house? Clear line of sight, or trees, sheds and a rise in the way?
- Does it have power and internet nearby? Mains power out there, and is there a fixed line, or is it genuinely off grid?
Your answers drop you straight onto one of the fixes below. No guesswork.
Close by, with power: mesh or a second access point
If the building is within a house length or two and has a power point, the cheapest reliable fix is to put another access point out there and feed it back to the house.
Best: run a cable. Outdoor-rated cable from the house to a second access point, or a mesh node in wired-backhaul mode, gives full-speed WiFi in the outbuilding. Some conduit and you are set for years. The full case for the buried run, and how to do it so it lasts, is in running a cable to the shed.
Good enough: a mesh node. If you cannot run a cable, a mesh system with a node placed near a window facing the house can bridge the gap wirelessly. More fragile and slower than cable, but plug and play. The outdoor extender guide covers what to buy and what to leave on the shelf.
A granny flat is usually this case: close, powered, and sometimes with its own fixed line already. Far, but you can see it: a point to point bridge
Once the building is too far to mesh but you can still see it from the house, stop thinking about WiFi and think about a point to point wireless bridge: a matched pair of small dish or panel radios, one aimed at the other, carrying a solid link hundreds of metres, sometimes kilometres, as long as nothing blocks the path.
- One radio on the house, fed by your internet, and one on the shed, aimed dead at each other.
- At the shed end, plug that into a normal access point and you have full WiFi out there.
- Line of sight is everything. A single tree or roofline in the path can wreck it, so mount high and aim carefully.

No fixed line at the site: 4G, 5G or Starlink
If the problem is not distance from the house but that there is no fixed internet at the property at all, extending WiFi will not help. There is nothing to extend, so you need to bring a connection in:
- 4G or 5G home wireless. A mobile-network modem, and the simplest option if you have decent mobile signal at the site. Check the coverage maps, and better still, stand there and watch the bars on your phone.
- Starlink. Satellite internet for when mobile coverage is poor or absent. It needs a clear view of the sky and draws real power, but it works genuinely remote.

No power either: solar and Starlink
Right out on the back paddock with no mains, the constraint becomes power, not signal. You can absolutely put connectivity out there, but everything has to run off a battery topped up by solar:
- A solar panel and battery sized for the gear’s real draw. Starlink in particular is not a low power device, so size the battery for cloudy days, not sunny ones.
- Low power networking kit at the far end.
This is off grid territory and the sizing is the whole game: undersize the battery and it dies every overcast week. That is Starlink Rural territory, where the panel and battery are sized to the site rather than guessed at.
The metal shed trap: a steel shed is a Faraday cage
Here is the one that catches everyone. You have a Colorbond or steel shed close to the house, good signal right up to the door, and nothing inside. So you buy a bigger antenna and blast harder from the house. It does not help. It never helps.
A steel shed is a Faraday cage: the metal skin reflects radio and will not let it through. Turning up the power outside just bounces more signal off the outside of the shed. The signal is not weak, it is blocked.
The fix is to stop trying to get signal in and instead put an access point inside the shed and feed it:
- Run a cable in through a gland or gap and plug in an access point inside. Best option.
- If you cannot run a cable, mount one radio of a point to point pair outside the shed, where the signal is fine, and cable it through the wall to an access point inside.

Pick your fix
The short version, by situation:
- Close, has power: cable or mesh a second access point out there.
- Far, clear line of sight: a point to point wireless bridge, with an access point at the far end.
- No fixed internet at the site: 4G or 5G home wireless if you have mobile signal, otherwise Starlink.
- No power at all: solar, a battery and Starlink, with low power kit.
- Metal shed: an access point inside the shed, fed by a cable or a point to point radio.

Will a stronger antenna get WiFi into my shed?
Usually not. A bigger antenna only helps when weak signal is the problem. For a metal shed the signal is blocked, not weak, so pushing harder from the house just bounces off the steel. The reliable fix is almost always to carry the connection out to the building and put an access point where you need it, rather than shouting louder from the router.
How do I choose between a mesh node, a wireless bridge and a mobile connection?

What if the building has no power at all?
